Relationships
Gilbert Blythe
Winifred was a former interest in Gilbert Blythe, and seen as one of the antagonists on the show due to Gilbert's fascination with her. Gilbert winds up inviting her to the county fair with her family, which is publicly perceived that he is courting her, with the approval of her family. Many begin to anticipate that Gilbert intends to propose to her before he begins his medical studies, but Gilbert ends up telling Winifred that he cannot marry her because he is in love with Anne. Winifred is upset and humiliated that she was rejected for what Gilbert believes is unrequited love, and he agrees to her request to keep the rejection discreet to preserve her reputation long enough for her to leave town and avoid the impeding gossip.
Etymology
Winifred is an anglicized form of Gwenfrewi, which is Welsh for the words white, fair, blessed and reconciliation, peace. Note that the name Winifred isn't the same as the Old English name Winfred. Rose comes from the name of the flower, rose, which is derived from the Latin word rosa.
