Behind the scenes[]

Story notes

  • The story gives no clue about its time setting, but it mentions Anne Shirley's presence at the wedding. The actual time setting is revealed in Anne of the Island, published after Chronicles of Avonlea. The final chapter of that book takes place concurrently with the events of this story. Gilbert Blythe stops by at Green Gables to ask Anne for a walk through September woods. Anne cannot go because she is invited to Alice Penhallow's wedding that evening and promises to go out with him the following afternoon. The day after Alice's wedding, Gilbert proposes to Anne in Hester Gray's Garden.[1] His proposal took place in September 1887 – therefore "The Winning of Lucinda" must be set in September 1887 as well.
