Behind the scenes[]

Continuity

  • Josephine Barry and Rollings last appeared in "Wherever You Are Is My Home".
  • Malcolm Frost makes his first and only appearance in this episode.
  • Anne decided to write a letter to Gilbert and took the first sheet from Nate's trunk in "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
  • Matthew and Marilla agreed on not having their soil tested in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things, But Interpretations Are Illimitable".
  • Mr. Dunlop steals Matthew's gun from the cupboard in the parlor. Its existence was revealed in "Wherever You Are Is My Home", when Matthew thought of committing suicide.
  • Mr. Dunlop wants to mask his share of the grift as his inheritance from Aunt Beatrice. He mentioned her death and last will in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things...".
  • Nate says Mr. Dunlop's habit of drinking might come from his days as a soldier. The latter mentioned fighting in the Boer War in "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
  • Jerry started learning to write in "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
  • Nate and Mr. Dunlop beat and robbed Jerry of the horse money in "Wherever You Are Is My Home". Jerry wasn't able to recall their faces until the end of this episode.
  • Jerry blames himself for causing the boarders to come to Green Gables because he lost the money. However, Marilla had paid for the advert in the newspapers before Jerry and Anne even left for Charlottetown. Both events took place in "Wherever You Are Is My Home".
  • Gilbert left Avonlea in "Remorse Is the Poison of Life". He must have started working on S.S. Primrose at some point between the events of "Wherever You Are Is My Home" and "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
  • Nate showed the gold certificate at the town meeting in "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
  • Mrs. Barry is ashamed of her husband's intoxication and Anne and Diana's visit to the pub. Her disapproval of alcohol was previously shown in "Tightly Knotted to a Similar String" and "Signs Are Small Measurable Things...".
  • Matthew and Marilla go over the books and find out they are able to pay off the bank and have some extra money left. Matthew borrowed money from the bank in "Remorse Is the Poison of Life" after he learned the vessel with their crops went down. When he suffered a heart attack, Marilla and Anne tried to renegotiate the loan and sold the valuable things, ultimately taking in the boarders. That occurred in "Wherever You Are Is My Home".
  • Minnie May recalls herself being sick and having gotten onions on her feet against the fever. That occurred in "Remorse Is the Poison of Life".
  • Nate gave Anne his book in in "Youth Is the Season of Hope" and showed her the gold sample under his microscope in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things...".
  • Anne heard Mr. Dunlop and Nate arguing in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things...".
  • Mrs. Barry threatens to end Diana and Anne's friendship. She forbade them to associate after the events of "Tightly Knotted to a Similar String".
  • Mr. Dunlop previously sang "The Friends We Love" at the Barrys' event in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things...".
  • While on the run, Mr. Dunlop throws away the apron Anne gave to him in "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
  • Marilla indirectly recalls herself being foolish to think Nate had any affection for her. That occurred in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things...".
  • Gilbert met Bash in "Youth Is the Season of Hope". They landed in Trinidad in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things...".
  • This episode shows flashbacks to "Wherever You Are Is My Home", "Youth Is the Season of Hope", and "Signs Are Small Measurable Things, But Interpretations Are Illimitable".

Cultural references

  • Jerry mentions they don't keep alcohol in their house because they are Catholics. In the late 19th century, many Christian churches founded the temperance unions and were strongly opposing alcohol, blaming it for the social crises and poverty.
  • Receptionist mocks Anne by calling her Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is a fictional private detective, known from the works of British author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
  • Mr. Dunlop once again sings "The Friends We Love", an 1868 song by Septimus Winner (published under his pseudonym, Alice Hawthorne).
  • Anne and Marilla pray Psalm 23, The Lord Is My Shepherd. The scene shows them saying verse 23:4, using the King James Bible version. ("Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me.")
  • Iron pyrite, also known as fool's gold, is a mineral often mistaken for a real gold due to its metallic luster and pale brass-yellow hue.
