"The Journey Begins" is the first episode of Season 1 of Road to Avonlea and the first episode overall.

Summary

Sara Stanley, the privileged daughter of a wealthy Montreal merchant, is suddenly sent to live with her deceased mother’s relatives in the town of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Sara manages to adjust, despite her Aunt Hetty's harsh treatment and the pranks played by her cousins at King Farm.

Production notes

• Frances Hyland (Nanny Banks) is billed as a special guest star.
• Based on The Story Girl and The Golden Road by Lucy Maud Montgomery. The books are set in the village of Carlisle, not Avonlea, and are narrated by a character named Beverly, who along with his brother Felix, are sent to live with their Uncle Roger, Aunt Olivia, and cousins Felicity, Cecily, and Dan. Sara Stanley, the titular Story Girl, is another cousin whose mother is "Aunt Felicity."
