Behind the scenes[]
References
- The Avonlea Book Club is planning to discuss A Midsummer Night's Dream, a comedy written by famous English playwright William Shakespeare in 1595/96. Mrs. Lynde's parlor is decorated to resemble the forest to fit the theme of the play. Gilbert is to perform a part from the book and he chooses the role as Nick Bottom, the character who turns into a donkey. Mrs. Lynde then asks him to wear a costume for the occassion.
- Anne offers to perform too and searches for the right part in Complete Works of Shakespeare, a volume containing all the plays and poems of William Shakespeare.
- Peg Bowen likes the witches scene from Macbeth, a tragedy by Shakespeare thought to have been first performed in 1606. In the end, Anne chooses that very scene to perform at the meeting.
- Rachel Lynde mentions they would read a book by an English novelist Charles Dickens for the following month. She wants Anne and Gilbert to perform a part from A Christmas Carol, Dickens' famous novella published in 1843.
