Quotes[]

Rachel Lynde: I've brought up ten children and buried two, and they'd all testify to the efficiency of my methods.
Marilla Cuthbert: I've no doubt.
Rachel: Of course, folks that have raised children know that you've got to expect the unexpected when it comes to flesh and blood. I recall a time I came home to find my eldest, Thomas Jr., setting fire to the drapes. Nothing a birch switch couldn't cure.
Marilla: Was that before or after he burned down your shed?

Marilla: How was the beauty contest? I mean, school.

Anne Shirley: Diana, it is my firm belief that my life would be easier if I was beautiful like you.
Diana Barry: Nonsense! I'd trade my dimples for any of your cleverness and consider it cheaply bought at that price.
Anne: Diana, I'm so glad you're exquisite. Next to being beautiful oneself... it's best to have a beautiful bosom friend.

Mrs. Pye: Beauty is power, darling. You know that.

Marilla: Now, now. I reckon beauty doesn't enter into it. When someone loves you, Anne... then you'll be kissed.

Behind the scenes[]

Continuity

  • Mr. Phillips and Prissy's romance was first shown in "But What Is So Headstrong as Youth?".
  • Jane mentions hearing Rachel and Thomas Lynde sharing a kiss. Their affection was depicted or mentioned several times, notably in "Tightly Knotted to a Similar String" and "Signs Are Small Measurable Things, But Interpretations Are Illimitable".
  • Gilbert left Avonlea after his father's death in "Remorse Is the Poison of Life". He worked in Charlottetown and later sailed on S.S. Primrose, where he met Bash. ("Wherever You Are Is My Home", "Youth Is the Season of Hope")
  • Gilbert and Bash landed in Trinidad in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things...". After Gilbert received Anne's letter and delivered a baby of a local woman named Ruth, he and Bash decided to come to Avonlea and settle down at Gilbert's farm. ("The Painful Eagerness of Unfed Hope")
  • Fireman showed dislike of Gilbert's disobedience and singing in "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
  • Anne previously recalled bad memories of the Older Girl bullying her in "Your Will Shall Decide Your Destiny" and "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
  • Prissy mentions her mother being happy about Mr. Phillips aiding her daughter with preparing for the higher education. Mrs. Andrews was seen as a member of the Progressive Mothers Sewing Club, expressing her wishes for Prissy being an educated woman in "But What Is So Headstrong as Youth?".
  • Josie teases Anne about knowing a lot about intimate relations. She refers to the incorrect assumption Anne made about Mr. Phillips and Prissy being intimate in "But What Is So Headstrong as Youth?".
  • Anne previously made Matthew uneasy with her questions about love in "The Painful Eagerness of Unfed Hope".
  • Mr. Phillips punishes Cole for having feminine proclivities. Cole was called Sissy and had his masculinity questioned by his schoolmates in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things..."
  • Matthew promised not to question Marilla's method of raising Anne in "Your Will Shall Decide Your Destiny".
  • Matthew mentions Marilla's relationship with John Blythe. It was explored through flashbacks in "Remorse Is the Poison of Life".
  • Anne finally receives a letter from Gilbert. She sent him a message about gold in "The True Seeing Is Within" and was waiting for his response in "The Painful Eagerness of Unfed Hope".
  • Gilbert sent the letter in "The Painful Eagerness of Unfed Hope", stating he would not return to Avonlea. Moments after sending the message, he helped Ruth deliver her baby and changed his mind about coming home.
  • The gold in Avonlea storyline was explored in "Youth Is the Season of Hope", "Signs Are Small Measurable Things..." and "The True Seeing Is Within".
  • Diana recalls Anne and Gilbert's spelling duel and Gilbert misspelling the word "engagements". That took place in "Tightly Knotted to a Similar String" and was later referred to in "Wherever You Are Is My Home".
  • Bash showed Gilbert the thyme plant in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things..."
  • Anne met the fox near the Story Club shed in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things..."
  • Josie took interest in Cole in "Signs Are Small Measurable Things..."
  • In the flashbacks, Older Girl destroys Anne's copy of Jane Eyre. Another of her books was burned in the fireplace in "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
  • Anne first met the Peddler in "The Painful Eagerness of Unfed Hope".

Cultural references

  • Anne compares Diana's lips to Cupid's bow. Cupid is the Roman god of love, affection and desire. He is often depicted with bow and arrow.
  • Diana notices Jerry's French is different from the classic French she was taught. Jerry most likely speaks Acadian French, a variety of Canadian French used by the Francophone population of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
  • During the supper, Anne quotes from "Fatima", a 1833 poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson.
  • After dying her hair, Anne quotes from Marmion, a 1808 poem by Walter Scott. The excerpt "Oh, what a tangled web we weave / When first we practise to deceive!" is one of the most quoted from Scottish poetry, despite being frequently incorrectly attributed to Shakespeare.
