"Signs Are Small Measurable Things, But Interpretations Are Illimitable" is the second episode of Season 2 of CBC's Anne with an E (2017–2019) and the ninth episode of the series overall. It was written by Shernold Edwards and directed by Paul Fox. It premiered on Netflix on July 6, 2018, and it was eventually broadcast on CBC on September 30, 2018.
Summary[]
The steamer lands in Trinidad, bringing Bash face to face with his past. The Barrys get behind the gold rush, but Matthew and Marilla aren't so sure.

- The town meeting held to discuss the gold mining was held in the previous episode, "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
- Nate lent Anne his geology book in "Youth Is the Season of Hope".
- Both Gilbert and Anne recall the latter breaking her slate onto Gilbert's head after he called her Carrots. That occurred in "But What Is So Headstrong as Youth?".
- Diana mentions Anne saving Minnie May's life, an event which took place in "Remorse Is the Poison of Life".
- Anne decided to teach Jerry how to write in "Youth Is the Season of Hope".

However, Marilla is unaware of the fact Anne observed the meeting from her hideout and made it home just before the Cuthberts.
- Matthew mentions only just settling up with the bank. He borrowed money from the bank in "Remorse Is the Poison of Life" after he learned the vessel with their crops went down. After he suffered a heart attack, Marilla and Anne tried to renegotiate the loan and sold the valuable things, ultimately taking in the boarders. That occurred in "Wherever You Are Is My Home".
Cultural references
- Bash uses some words in Jamaican Patois, an English-based creole language with West African influences, most notably mawga to express that Gilbert is skinny.
- Hazel used to cook crab callaloo which is a traditional Caribbean dish, consisting of leaf vegetable (called callaloo or dasheen), okra, coconut milk, pumpkin, onions, bell peppers, local seasonings and spices, and crabs or pigtails.
- Bash says he's a free man since 1834. He refers to the Slavery Abolition Act 1833, which abolished slavery throughout the British Empire. It came into force on August 1, 1834.
- Mr. Phillips read "Lancelot and Elaine", one of the narrative poems featured in Idylls of the King (1859) by Alfred Lord Tennyson. The author had previously used the characters in his 1833 poem "The Lady of Shalott", which is read by Anne's counterpart in the 1985 film Anne of Green Gables.
- Mary Joe suggests they should make a Nesselrode pie, much to Mrs. Barry's disapproval. Nesselrode pie was named after Russian diplomat, Count Nesselrode, and would become popular in the 1950s and 1960s. It contains chestnuts, candied fruits, and rum or brandy.
- Diana and Mr. Dunlop perform "The Friends We Love", an 1868 song by Septimus Winner (published under his pseudonym, Alice Hawthorne).
