Season 5

Season 5 is the fifth season of Road to Avonlea (1990–1996). It premiered with "Fathers and Sons" on January 9, 1994, and ended with "The Minister's Wife" on March 27, 1994.

Summary[]

Sara has blossomed into an independent and self-assured young lady, but one that still has a penchant for trouble. Now a fully-integrated member of Avonlea society, she begins to think about the day she must leave the security of her new home.

Felix lashes out against his father and rejects the notion of becoming a farmer. Hetty turns 50, but the celebration is soured when her writing contract is cancelled and she must endure a risky operation.

A visiting politician offers Alec an opportunity to run for office, but Alec questions the politician's shady dealings. Jasper and Olivia purchase the cannery and apply modern ideas to improve efficiency. Cecily falls ill with tuberculosis and Janet must make a difficult decision whether to send her to a sanitarium.

Once again, the stories in this volume range from uproariously funny to poignantly emotional.

		Felix King is caught between a rock and a hard place. His father gives him more chores around the farm to prepare him for the day he will take over, and Mr. Tremayne has assigned him to take special care of a particularly obnoxious guest, millionaire clothier Samuel Boddin.

		The King family plan a surprise party to celebrate Hetty's 50th birthday. When Hetty's publishers terminate her contract, she retreats into the memories of her childhood and begins to question the worthiness of her life's accomplishments. The birthday plans go astray when Hetty falls deathly ill and must require surgery.

		Jasper Dale has taken a responsible job as a bank teller but becomes increasingly depressed as it has stifled his passion to invent. Opportunity knocks however, when Hetty buys Mr. Dunn’s lobster cannery after she discovers he intends to turn it into a distillery.

		Hetty and Sara watch the Keith twins while Rachel Lynde visits her son Billy in Kirksville. Davey's inability to read creates problems for Sara, who believes Davey is trying to cause trouble. Olivia discovers that Izzy is outgrowing her tom boy appearance and convinces Clive to buy his daughter a dress.

		It’s the annual Drama competition and after losing 22 years in a row, Hetty finally has an ace up her sleeve; Muriel Stacey, who had the lead in Avonlea’s last winning entry, will play the lead. Hetty is so confident Avonlea will win that she wagers her secret family recipe for the famous King cranberry pie in a bet with arch rival Eleanor McHugh.

		Fearing he will be injured, Janet King won’t allow Felix and his horse Prince to enter the Harvest Fair steeplechase. Undaunted, Felix sneakily enlists Mr. Tremayne to coach him. Alec is angry when he finds out, but Tremayne convinces him that Felix only did what Alec would have done at fourteen.

		Alec discovers a stray in his barn by the name of Caleb Stokes. Caleb proves to be a valuable and trusted handyman for the King family. Alec considers making Caleb a permanent hired hand, but problems arise when a traveling salesman reveals the stranger's true identity.

		Felix King is smitten with Adeline, the daughter of a visiting politician, John Hodgson who courts Alec to run for office. When things go missing at the hotel, including Aunt Hetty’s purse holding a ten dollar bill, everyone suspects the new impoverished waiter, Elbert, despite Adeline’s possession of a ten dollar bill.

		The King family are devastated when Cecily contracts tuberculosis. Felicity and Muriel seek out a doctor to learn more about the disease. Alec and Janet must make a painful decision on whether to send Cecily to a sanitarium.

		As penance for a careless accident he caused, Hetty orders Davey Keith to perform three good deeds, the first being directed towards Jasper Dale. Davey is the cause of yet another accident in Jasper’s laboratory, but one that helps create a new unbreakable ceramic-like material.

		Gus Pike is promoted to assistant manager at the hotel, and with his new position and salary, asks Felicity King to marry him. Felicity has just been accepted to medical school, and wants to wait until she is finished her studies before they marry, but Gus feels he’s waited long enough already.

		John Elliot becomes the new minister of Avonlea, but his style of preaching challenges the towns conventional expectations. The reverand's son, Booth, becomes interested in Sara and introduces her to rag time music. Sara deceives Hetty and goes to an Acadian celebration with Booth.

		Janet befriends Viola Elliott, the minister’s wife, who the townsfolk feel is too eccentric for the position she holds. Things go from bad to worse when Viola gives Janet some of her “restorative tonic” which results in the two going for a drunken joy ride in Muriel Stacey’s car.
