Sara Stanley was the daughter of Blair and Ruth Stanley, the niece of Hetty, Alec, Roger and Olivia and the cousin of Felicity, Andrew, Felix, Cecily, Daniel, Montgomery and Alicia.

Biography

Born and initially raised in Montreal, Sara was the only child born to Blair Stanley and his wife, Ruth King. Ruth died from tuberculosis when Sara was a toddler, so Sara was primarily raised by her nanny, Louisa Banks. When Sara was ten years old, her father was accused of embezzlement and she was sent with Louisa to Sara's maternal relatives in Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. In Avonlea, Sara was separated from her nanny and resided with her two maiden aunts, Hetty and Olivia King, at Rose Cottage.

Etymology

Sara is a female given name of Jewish origin meaning a "woman of high rank", often translated as "princess" or "female minister."

Trivia

• The official Road to Avonlea website describes Sara as an adventurous ten-year-old girl used to living luxuriously in Montreal with her father and nanny, who must learn to adjust to simpler life in the rural village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island. Her mother was Ruth King, sister to Hetty, Alec, Roger and Olivia, who died when Sara was a toddler. When Sara’s father runs into trouble, he arranges to have Sara stay for a time in Avonlea. Sara reluctantly stays without her nanny and lives with her single aunts Hetty and Olivia at Rose Cottage. Sara learns to appreciate the lifestyle Avonlea has to offer and eventually comes to enjoy it.
• Sara Stanley is based on the character of the same name from L.M. Montgomery's books The Story Girl and The Golden Road, the Story Girl in the former's title.
  • In the books, Felix King and his brother Beverley are the ones sent to live with Alec and Janet. Sara lives with Olivia and her brother Roger at the onset of the novel.
