SCENE: Barry's Pond
Anne Shirley: Why can’t they hurry up?
Diana Barry: First one out gets to claim the wharf!
Gilbert Blythe: Ha, then I think I’ll call it ‘Gilbert Island’!
Diana: Oh, yeah? We’ll see about that!
Felicity King: Calm down, everyone. Calm down. They’re almost finished securing the wharf.
Matthew Cuthbert: Ah. It’s ready!
Felicity: Out of my way!
Gilbert: Hey, wait! Not fair!
Anne: Huh? What’s the matter, Felix?
Felix King: Guess I don’t feel like swimming.
Anne: Don’t worry about them. Take your time!
Matthew: Watch out. Rough water’s ahead. Wooow.
Felicity: I claim the wharf! I claim the wharf!
Gilbert: No fair!
Felicity: Wooo!
Anne: Hey, watch where you’re jumping!
Gilbert: What’s the matter, slowpoke?
Felix: Too… hard. I’m a bad swimmer.
Diana: You won’t be for long.
Felicity: Now that Perry’s brother is back from college to give us swimming lessons.
Anne: Oh, brother indeed.
Diana: There’s our swim coach now!
Felicity: Yoohoo! Hi, Lorne! Oh, this will be such a wonderful summer.
Felix: Oh. I’m not so sure about that.
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Lorne: Since you all know how to swim…
Gilbert: Some better than others.
Felix: Huh!
Gilbert: Hey!
Lorne: Our swimming lessons will focus on how to improve so you can swim further and faster.
Felicity: Ah, whatever you say, Lorne.
Lorne: Good. At the end of our lessons, we’ll have a demonstration to show the town what you’ve learned.
Children: Hooray! Yeah! Hooray!
Felix: Oh…
Lorne: Let’s form teams for a relay swim.
Felicity: Me, me first!
Lorne: Now, this isn’t a race.
Felicity: Hahahaha! That’s what he thinks.
Lorne: It’s only to encourage us to be our best. You’ll never get better without challenging yourselves. First up! Go!
Lorne: That’s quite a snack you’ve got.
Felix: You want a piece?
Lorne: Thanks, but I prefer healthier snacks.
Felicity: As usual. I was first!
Gilbert: Were not!
Felicity: Was too!
Lorne: Not bad for starters.
Gilbert: That was nothing! Look what I can do!
Diana: Oh, yeah? Look at us!
Felicity: I can do a loopty-loop in the water.
Tadaa!
Anne: I can do better than them, Lorne!
Felicity: Then show us, Miss Smartypants.
Anne: I’ll do uh… uh… a triple-decker-swirly-gig!
Lorne: A what?
Anne: Wooow! Uh!
Lorne: [gasps]
Anne: Ouch. Oh, the humiliation.
Diana: Anne, are you okay?
Anne: Oh, I’m fine, just… fine. Ow, ow, ow.
Lorne: Now everybody, let this be a lesson on the importance of safety around water. Never run on the wharf!
Anne: I assure you, I never will again.
Lorne: Still, you have to rest your shoulder.
Anne: For how long?
Lorne: The rest of the day at least.
Anne: The rest of the day?!
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Anne: So much for impressing Lorne.
Felix: You’re lucky you don’t have to swim.
Lorne: Anne? I’ll give you some exercises to help that injury heal.
Anne: I feel certain a great struggle lies before me, but I shall do as you say. So long as I’m ready for the demonstration.
Lorne: Felix? Time to get in the water.
Felix: Um, well… Uh… I’m resting too.
Lorne: The only thing you need to rest is your jaws.
Felix: I’ll never measure up compared to all of them.
Anne: That’s no reason to miss swimming.
Felix: I don’t wanna swim.
Lorne: Well, how about diving?
Felix: Diving?
Lorne: It’s as solitary a sport as you can get. I’m on the university team.
Anne: Now that’s a demonstration I wanna see!
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Lorne: You mustn’t dive off just any old tree! The water has to be plenty deep.
Anne: I’m practically swooning with excitement!
Gilbert: Woow.
Anne: Gosh!
Felix: Yaay! Do another one!
Lorne: Why don’t you try one?
Felix: Could I?
Lorne: It’s safe. What have you got to lose?
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Felicity: I hope my brother doesn’t flub it up.
Felix: Ooh.
Lorne: That’s it, Felix! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Felix: Huh. Aaah!
Children: [laughing]
Felicity: Just as I feared.
Gilbert: Hey, Felix! You nearly drained the pond!
SCENE: Cliffs, later
Anne: Felix, wait!
Felix: I give up. I’m not going back to Barry’s pond. Ever!
Anne: Was it that bad?
Felix: No… It was wonderful! The closest thing I've ever felt to flying!
Anne: Then what’s wrong?
Felix: All the others laughing at me. I can’t stand it!
Anne: Don’t give up. You’ll learn.
Felix: I can’t learn to dive off a silly branch.
Anne: Felix, I have been struck with a brilliant idea!
SCENE: Green Gables barn, evening
Matthew: Well, now. The water’s deep enough, that I know. But a diving tower, that’s a lot of work.
Felix: We’ll help. We promise!
Matthew: This would mean a lot to you, wouldn’t it?
Felix: Yes, sir.
Matthew: Well… I do have some extra wood.
Felix: Yaay!
SCENE: King's house, night
Felix: The crowd is hushed as Felix King, Avonlea’s greatest diver, takes the platform. He will be doing a feet-first-triple-twist-layout with a reverse tuck.
Felicity: Felix? Are you still up?
Felix: Uh-oh, it’s way past my bedtime.
[pretends to snore]
Felicity: Hmm…
Felix: Phew. I think I’ll practise without books. Now… a double pike with a twist!
SCENE: Barry's Pond, next morning
Felix: [yawns] Huh. Woooa.
Matthew: [off-screen] Thanks, Anne.
Anne: Felix, what’s wrong with you?
Felix: [yawns] I didn’t get much sleep last night.
Anne: That was silly! You knew we had an early morning.
Gilbert: [off-screen] Wow, look, a diving tower!
Diana: Won’t that be fun?
Matthew: Will you two fetch me more nails?
Felix: Yeah.
SCENE: In front of the Lawson's store, later
Felix: Mr. Lawson’s soda machine’s arrived.
Anne: We’re just supposed to get nails.
Felix: But sodas, Anne. I’ve been waiting for this day for ages!
Anne: Marilla says it’s nothing but tooth-rotting sugar water. She says all that effervescence can’t be good.
Felix: That’s ‘cause she’s never tried one.
SCENE: In front of the store, later
Anne: They really are good.
Felix: [burps] Maybe three was too many.
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Matthew: Well, that’s the tower done.
Anne: [burps] Oh… excuse me.
Gilbert: I’m gonna be first!
Felicity: No, I am!
Felix: Huh, oooh.
Lorne: Felix? Would you like to go first?
Felix: Oh, I… I don’t know.
Anne: Come on, Felix, don’t be afraid!
Lorne: Just keep it simple. Think about following your hands into the water.
Felix: Oh… [burps] Aaah!
Anne: Good try, Felix.
Felix: I was dumb to think I could do this.
Lorne: Don’t give up yet. All you need is some practice and a few exercises.
Felix: Exercises? Like what?
Lorne: You’ll see. First thing tomorrow morning.
Felix: First thing?
Anne: Oh, I… I wish I could be there with you!
Lorne: Oh, you will be!
Anne: I will?
Lorne: Don’t you wanna help that shoulder heal?
Anne: Oh… of course.
SCENE: Barry's Pond, evening
Gilbert: Great day!
Diana: Hey, let’s go get sodas!
Children: Yeah!
Felix: Sodas? Yeah!
Lorne: Are you sure you want that?
Anne: They’re the latest sensation, Lorne.
Lorne: If Felix eats better and gets proper sleep, he just might make diving the latest sensation.
Felix: I suppose you’re right. When I have a lot of sugar, I don’t feel so good.
SCENE: King's house, night
Felicity: I know it's obscenely late, but those sodas this afternoon, they were so delicious, and I couldn’t decide on which flavour, so I had three and now I’m just so giddy from the whole experience and I’m not the least bit tired and eh… Felix? Felix?
SCENE: Barry's Pond, next morning
Lorne: That’s it, you're doing great! This way you'll keep the shoulder limber while it heals.
Felix: I wanna learn to dive! What’s the point of stretching?
Lorne: Now that you’re limbered up, you’ll see how it helps.
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Felix: Huh.
Anne: Yay! Bravo!
Felix: Huh.
Lorne: A great start! You’re a natural!
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Felicity: [yawns] I need a word with Lorne about these early mornings. You swim. I’m too tired.
Diana: Hi, Anne. How’s the shoulder?
Anne: Lorne says I’ll be able to swim in time for the demonstration.
Felicity: Not on our team, you won’t.
Anne: What do you mean? It’s my team too!
Felicity: You’ll slow us down and make us lose.
Diana: We should give Anne a chance. It’s only a demonstration.
Anne: And you do need a fourth person.
Felicity: We’ll see if you can convince me. Otherwise, I’ll swim twice.
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Gilbert: Hey, Felix! You want one of my mum’s coconut sugar lumps?
Felix: No, thanks.
Felicity: My brother’s turning down sweets?
Gilbert: You still think you’re gonna be a diver like Lorne?
Felix: I’ll never know unless I try.
Gilbert: Hm, come on, everyone. Let’s go for sodas!
Anne: Felix, we have both been sorely underestimated.
Felix: We’ll show them!
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
SCENE: Green Gables, morning
Felix: Morning, Anne.
Anne: Felix, are you ready for this afternoon’s demonstration?
Felix: After practising all week, I sure am!
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Felix: I’ll put a few dives in before the other kids… arrive. What are they doing here?
Anne: I guess they are as excited as we are!
Felix: I can’t practise with them gawking.
Anne: Felix, everyone in Avonlea will be watching you this afternoon. You might as well get used to it now.
Felix: Oh.
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Gilbert: Why not give up on this silly idea?
Anne: Take that back! Felix is an excellent diver!
Felicity: Than why haven’t we seen it?
Gilbert: Face it! Neither of you is up to the demonstration.
Felicity: In fact, we took a vote and decided you shouldn’t be on our team.
Anne: How could you?
Diana: I voted for you, Anne.
Felix: Come on, let’s get out of here!
What a failure.
Anne: You’ll do better this afternoon.
Felix: No, I won’t. I was silly to think I could do this.
Anne: It was only one bad dive. Felix!
Lorne: What’s wrong?
Anne: Felix is upset. We have been sorely misjudged by the other kids. I’ll go get him.
Lorne: That’s… uh… very good of you.
SCENE: Woods
Anne: Felix! Felix! Oh dear. Maybe he’s right. Maybe we’d only make fools of ourselves and let everybody else down.
SCENE: Anne's imagination, woods
Dryad: Now why would you go and think that?
Anne: Dryad! We were flops. Belly flops.
Dryad: But you did everything right! Ate properly, got plenty of rest and practised! Put it together and what do you get?
Anne: Not good enough.
Dryad: Now, you listen up. All you need is a little belief in yourself!
Anne: Right now, that feels excruciatingly impossible!
Dryad: Oh really?! I have an idea. Come on!
SCENE: Anne’s imagination, woods, later
Anne: Me? Conduct the fairy trio?
Dryad: Well, I may have a lot of things going for me. I just ain’t got no rhythm.
Anne: But I can’t conduct. My arm!
Dryad: May I remind you that your arm has healed?
Anne: Oh, an exceedingly good point.
Dryad: Now, you’ll notice the fairy trio has changed since you last heard them.
Anne: How’s that?
Dryad: It’s now a quartet. Smashsprite has joined them.
Anne: Smashsprite? But he was so bad they wouldn’t let him join before.
Dryad: He practised. Limbered up his hands to be flexible and lightning-quick.
Anne: Very well, then. Uhm. It doesn’t seem like Gapgoblin or Nosenymph have practised.
Dryad: It certainly doesn’t. Cue the Smashsprite!
Anne: Smashsprite! Your hard work has certainly paid off.
Smashsprite: Ooh!
Dryad: Isn’t that what you and your friend have done? Worked hard?
Anne: Well… sure, but we’d never be that spectacular.
Dryad: You never know if you give up now!
Anne: You’re right! We must give it a try!
SCENE: Woods
Anne: That’s it! I’ve got to find Felix!
SCENE: Road to the village, later
Marilla Cuthbert: Hello, Anne.
Matthew: We’re very excited about the show.
Anne: So am I. Have you seen Felix?
Matthew: I believe I saw him at Lawson’s.
Anne: Oh, no! That’s the worst place on Earth!
Matthew: Well now, what’s so bad about…
Anne: I’ll explain later. Gotta go! Bye!
Matthew: Bye.
Marilla: Hmm.
SCENE: Lawson's store, later
Anne: Don’t drink it!
Felix: Just having a snack.
Anne: This is no snack. You should be nourishing yourself for your dive!
Felix: I can’t dive. I’ll mess up.
Anne: You may not be perfect, but you’re better. Because you worked so hard, gaining strength and energy, eating well and getting lots of rest! You won’t do a belly flop. You can’t!
Felix: Sorry, Mr. Lawson. Some other time.
Anne: Felix, you won’t regret it!
Felix: Let’s get this over with.
Felicity: [yawns] What’s the rush? Why, Mr. Lawson.
Mr. Lawson: Felicity.
Felicity: Is that soda for me? If you insist, just one. Then I’ve got to get back to the demonstration.
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Lorne: Anne, Felix! I’m glad to see you. [someone whistles in the background] Oh, that’s the relay.
Anne: I’m going to swim on my team no matter what Felicity says.
Felix: Good luck, Anne.
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Diana: We don’t know where Felicity is.
Anne: Then, I guess regardless of my shoulder, I’ll be needed.
Diana: I’ll say.
Felicity: [burps] Oops.
Diana: Uh oh.
Anne: Felicity? Have you been swigging sodas?
Felicity: Only two… [burps] and a half.
Diana: How are we supposed to do a good demonstration with you all … all … bubbly!?
Felicity: Well, I’ll… I’ll float better this way.
Diana: Anne’s swimming, no two ways about it.
Felicity: Traitor! [sighs] If you insist on this terrible mistake, then she can swim last. I refuse to make up for her… [burps] slowness.
Lorne: Swimmers, on your mark!
Diana: Felicity, are you ready?
Felicity: [burps]
Lorne: [off-screen] Get set, go!
Anne: [off-screen] She’s slower than a jelly fish.
Diana: We’ll have to do our best, two, three.
Anne: Come on, Diana! Give it your all!
Gilbert: Huh, you’re never gonna catch up! Look how far behind you are.
Anne: We’ll see about that.
Gilbert: You think you and your flimsy shoulder can beat us?
Felix: Come on, Anne! Don’t give up!
Felicity: She’ll never catch up.
Diana: Look again, Felicity. Those exercises worked after all.
Crowd: Come on!
Matthew: Come on, Anne.
Lorne: And it’s a tie! Ladies and gentlemen, you’ve seen a great display of skill today.
Diana: Hooray!
Felix: Yay! Alright!
Gilbert: I never thought you had it in you.
Lorne: Up next is a diving demonstration by Felix King.
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Felix: [whispers to himself] You can do this. Practised and you know exactly what to do.
Felicity: I don’t know why he wants to put himself through the embarrassment.
Anne: Have some faith in him.
Gilbert: What the–?
Diana: Did you see that?
Anne: He was fabulous!
Felicity: Huh?
Gilbert: Felix, that was great!
Diana: Encore, encore!
SCENE: Barry's Pond, later
Felicity: Wow, he really is amazing.
SCENE: Green Gables, evening
Lorne: And so let us raise our apple cider to the two stars of today’s demonstration, Felix and Anne. I am so proud of you both.
Anne: We couldn’t have done it without you.
Felix: I couldn’t have done it without you, Anne. You reminded me that if I change some habits, I can make a difference.
Gilbert: Say, what are you having here?
Matthew: Apple cider! Want some?
Anne: It’s delicious!
Felix: And good for you!
Felicity: I’m on my second glass and I don’t feel the least bit woozy.
Gilbert: I’ll have whatever this guy’s having. It seems to do the trick.
A WORD FROM THE KIDS
Haleigh Sheehan: Can anyone tell us what it means when people say 'practice makes perfect'?
Girl in White: 'Practice makes perfect' means that if you have to give a demonstration on something and if you practise beforehand, you can get used to it and when you really have to give the demonstration, you won't feel so nervous and weird.
Girl in Grey: When they say 'practice makes perfect', it means if you practise a lot, you'll get better and better at everything.
Haleigh: In this episode, we see Anne practise to heal her shoulder and Felix practises his dives. Can anyone tell us how this helped them to do well?
Girl in Red: Anne and Felix ignored those who are making fun of them and went ahead and practised and they got perfect at it.
Heleigh: Is there anything that any of you here practise?
Girl in Grey: I practise basketball and soccer.
Girl in Purple: I practise playing the piano and studying.
Haleigh: Do you think that practising helped you to get better at what you do?
Boy in Grey: Practice does... helps you get better. I... I learn that when I was playing marbles that I kept losing and everybody started to laugh at me, but I kept practising and practising and when I won, everybody said I was really good at it.
Girl in Purple: When I practise the piano and I don't get this music right, I just keep practising and practising and I get it right.
Haleigh: Why did the kids have a hard time swimming after they drank the soda?
Girl in White: They couldn't swim after they drank the sodas because sodas are... make you giddy and hyperactive.
Boy in White: When they drank soda, they couldn't swim well because when you drink something a lot with sugar, your stomach gets bigger and so they couldn't swim, they kept on sinking. Just like if you put something extra... like a brick on a rubber duck, it'll sink.
Haleigh: Who can describe a healthy lifestyle?
Girl in Grey: If you eat healthy food, it will make you healthier. Like vegetables, fruit, milk, and water are healthy.
