SCENE: Avonlea cliffs, Saturday afternoon
Anne Shirley: As a gesture of my eternal gratitude for you picking me up, I have prepared a feast.
Matthew Cuthbert: Well now, that’ll be nice.
Anne: Oh, Matthew! The King family reunion was the second most wonderful adventure I’ve ever had! Every moment verged thrillingly on disaster. Feelings were torn asunder.
Matthew: [chuckles] And this was wonderful?
Anne: Yes! Because lives were changed forever. And all with enough tears to flood Avonlea.
Matthew: Do tell.
Anne: Oh, it’s a long story.
Matthew: We’ve got time. Besides, how often do I get to hear about someone’s second most wonderful adventure?
Anne: It all started Thursday, morning when I promised to help the Kings with their family reunion.
FLASHBACK: Kings' house, Thursday
Anne: [voice over] I must admit, I was curious. The King family is ever so large. Uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews and nieces had come from all over.
Anne: Hi, Felix!
Felix King: Hey, Anne!
Anne: [voice over] Imagine, from as far away as Nova Scotia and New York City. I was surprised that the King family asked me to help. But when I saw that even Felicity was in a good mood, I knew that everything would be just splendid.
Felicity King: Oh, Anne. Isn’t my new dress scrumptious? I want to make a good impression on my cousins.
Anne: It’s certainly… uh… a spectacle!
Felicity: [laughs]
Felicity and Felix: Aaah.
Felicity: Ugh. Oh, no! My dress!
Felix: Sorry.
Felicity: You did that on purpose! You’re trying to ruin the entire reunion!
Felix: It was an accident.
Anne: [voice over] That’s how it started. It’ll only got worse from there.
FLASHBACK: Felicity's room, Thursday, later
Anne: I saw him trip, Felicity. It was an accident, plain and simple.
Felicity: He’s the clumsiest person alive. Be thankful you don’t have an irritating little brother.
Anne: If I did, I’m sure we’d get along.
Felicity: That’s what you think. [sighs] I so wanted to impress my cousins, Peter and Penelope, with this dress.
Anne: Felix said they’re from Nova Scotia.
Felicity: That’s right. La-da-da-dee-da-da-da-dee-dee-dee. Oh, Anne. You have saved me. Now I’ll dazzle my cousins. You wait and see. I have it all planned.
You! Out of my room!
Felix: We’re supposed to be at the station.
Felicity: Thanks to you, we’ll be late.
Felix: I guess she’s still mad at me.
SCENE: Avonlea woods, Saturday afternoon, later
Anne: As we approached the station, a surge of excitement passed through me.
Matthew: Hmm. [chews]
Anne: That day, the 3:15 train could’ve been called the King Express.
FLASHBACK: Avonlea train station, Thursday afternoon, later
Anne: [voice over] It was clearly evident that every passenger was a member of the King family. Peter and Penelope were twins, which could have been confusing but due to my uncanny gift of observation I had no trouble determining who was who.
Felicity: These are for you, Penelope. From me and me alone.
Penelope King: Oh, how very kind!
Peter King: [smells the flowers] Nice!
Felix: Anne’s a friend. She’s helping us.
Felicity: Yes, Anne’s an orphan. She wanted to know what a big family is like.
Anne: Felicity!
Felicity: Well, it’s true.
Anne: [bows] Welcome to Avonlea.
Felicity: Yes. Well, Felix, I’ll see them home. You and Anne carry the baggage.
Felix: All this?
Felicity: We’ve got more important things to do.
Peter: You know, I think I’ll help out.
Felicity: Come on, Penelope.
Penelope: We should help, too.
Felicity: Me? In my new dress?
Penelope: I don’t give two hoots about fancy dresses myself.
Hang on, gang. I’ll help.
Felicity: How did that brother of mine do it? Ugh.
FLASHBACK: Avonlea, Thursday afternoon, later
Anne: [voice over] After the four of us made short work of the luggage, we did the grand tour of Avonlea.
FLASHBACK: Avonlea pasture, Thursday afternoon, later
Felix: Moo.
Anne: Gussy’s not very smart but she sure is grumpy.
Felix: Come on, Gussy.
Felix, Peter and Penelope: Mooo. [laugh]
Gussy: [moos]
Felicity: Felix, don’t make her angry.
Felix: Come on. Gussy. Come on!
See? It works! Ou. Ow.
Felicity: I told you to leave her alone.
Anne: Uh-oh. Gussy’s got that look in her eye. Come on!
Gussy: [moos]
Felix: Uh-oh. Oh. Catch!
Felicity: [gasps] Ah, nice cow! Huh. Whoa.
Gussy: [moos]
Anne: Run! Over here!
Felicity: [screams]
Peter and Penelope: Uh-oh. Drop the apple!
Felix: [laughs]
Felicity: [whines] Help me.
Gussy: [moos]
Felicity: You… brat!
Felix: Next stop, rafting at Barry’s Pond.
Felicity: No! Father said not to go on the water without an adult nearby.
Felix: He’ll never know.
Felicity: That’s what you said when you let the chickens out!
Felix: And thanks to you I was grounded for a week!
Felicity: [sighs] It’s not my fault that you won’t listen!
[screams, screeches]
Penelope: Uh, let’s do something else.
Anne: I know!
Felicity: You know?
Anne: Come on!
Felicity: [whimpers]
FLASHBACK: Green Gables barn, Thursday afternoon, later
Anne: Aaaaah. Ugh.
Penelope: Here I cooome! Ugh.
Peter: Felix, you want a turn!?
Felix: Nah, straw makes me itch.
Felicity: That’s not the reason!
Felix: Don’t you dare say anything!
Felicity: Felix is scared a snake might be in the hay.
Penelope: S-snakes?
Felicity: Snakes around here are harmless, but he’s still scared. Once one slithered into his lunch pail. You should’ve heard him scream.
Felix: I’m not scared now!
Felicity: Really? Then catch this!
Felix: Ah, get it off me, get it off!
Anne: It’s only a rope. Look!
Felix: I’ll get you for that!
Anne: Are family reunions always so nasty?
FLASHBACK: Green Gables kitchen, Thursday evening, later
Anne: You’d think they'd enjoy the visit.
Matthew: It can be difficult for brother and sister to get along.
Marilla Cuthbert: Now, Matthew, you and I have always gotten along.
Matthew: You have to admit, Marilla, once in a while we contradict each other.
Marilla: We do no such thing!
Matthew and Anne: [off-screen, laugh]
Matthew: [off-screen] See?
Marilla: [chuckles]
Anne: At least you laugh. Felicity and Felix would be throwing things.
Marilla: I’ve learned to accept my brother. So he leaves muddy footprints, so he doesn’t say two words to a stranger, he could be a lot worse.
Matthew: Sure could. Me, I accept that around here, even the dirt has to be clean. And that Marilla’s idea of relaxation is peeling potatoes. Watch, she’s winding up to contradict me again.
Marilla: I am not! In fact, you've worked so hard I think you should relax.
Matthew: Huh? And I accept that sometimes she’s a lot smarter than me. Huh.
Anne: Hooray! I won!
SCENE: Avonlea woods, Saturday afternoon, later
Anne: What a game that was.
Matthew: [off-screen] Are you sure you didn’t move that piece when I wasn’t looking?
Anne: Certainly not!
Matthew: Oh. So, did they mend their ways?
Anne: Alas, no. The next day led to the disaster of such magnitude that it was unimaginable! Even for me.
FLASHBACK: King's house, Friday
Kids: Hurry up!
Peter: I’m going as fast as I can!
Anne, Peter and Penelope: [laugh]
Felix: As a young member of the King family, I am proud to have… um…
Anne, Peter and Penelope: [laugh]
Felicity: Why that little stinger… ugh!
Felix: …to have so many Kings to… uh… emulate. [gasps]
Felicity: I bought this paper with my allowance!
Felix: Come on, I worked hard on that speech!
Felicity: And I worked hard for the paper! You can’t just take anything you want!
Felix: Give me my speech!
Felicity: You want it? Fine! Here’s your speech! Ew.
Felix: I’ll get you!
FLASHBACK: Felicity's room, Friday, later
Felicity: I wish I were an only child like you.
Anne: You don’t mean that. I’d give anything for a brother or a sister.
Felicity: You think everything is easy and wonderful and… That beast! My new dreess!
Felix: Ew.
Peter: [gasps]
Penelope: Now, Felicity. Don’t get angry.
Felix: Wo-ow.
Felicity: Give it!
Felix: Why should I?!
Felicity: Let go!
Felix and Felicity: [grunt]
Felix: Ugh.
Felicity: Ugh.
I hate you! I hate you!
Mrs. King: Stop it, both of you.
Felicity: He started it!
Felix: She did!
Mrs. King: It doesn’t matter. Since you can’t get along, you’ll both stay here tomorrow and miss the reunion.
Felix and Felicity: [gasp]
Penelope and Peter: [gasp]
Anne: Oh, no. How are we going to fix this?
SCENE: Avonlea woods, Saturday afternoon, later
Anne: [off-screen] I didn’t know what to do. Is it really so difficult for brothers and sisters to get along?
Matthew: Well now, Peter and Penelope didn’t fight.
Anne: Precisely! And Matthew, I had to figure out why.
FLASHBACK: Anne's room, Friday, later
Anne: [voice over] I found that when I’m facing a perplexing problem, imagination is extremely useful.
Katie Maurice: What’s that supposed to mean?
Anne: I wish I had a real family. Cousins and uncles and aunts. And most of all, a real brother.
Katie: And you would all look alike, and you’d never fight. And la-dee-da-dee-da.
Anne: Why not?! I’m allowed to dream.
Katie: All right, if you wish to dream, let’s dream!
“Dear family member…”
FLASHBACK: Anne's imagination, Green Gables barn
Katie: [voice over] “…Anne Shirley kindly requests your attendance at her first ever family reunion.”
Older Cousin: [off-screen] Cousin Anne?
I bring you greetings from the East.
Uncle Ed: [off-screen] Howdy, Anne.
Pleased to meet ya. I’m uncle Ed from way out West. [tsk tsk]
Anne: [tsk tsk, gasps]
Aunt Melba: I’m Aunt Melba, from way down South. I’m truly tickled to be here.
Younger Cousin: I came all the way across the sea to bring the greetings from the Old Country.
Anne: And where are those brothers of mine?
Brother: [off-screen] Here we are, Anne!
Anne: Ha!
Aha! Woo-hoo! [laughs] Now there’s enough of us kindred kin to make a baseball team!
FLASHBACK: Anne's imagination, Baseball field, later
First Brother: I’ve got first base covered, Anne. Try second.
Second Brother: ‘Fraid not, little sis. Try third.
Third Brother: No. How about catcher?
Fourth Broter: Uh-uh. This is mine, Annie Bananie.
Anne: Argh. Just where do you think I’m going to play?
Left field? I’ve never been so insulted!
Fifth Brother: Further back, Anne, further!
Anne: If this is the way I’m going to be treated, well then, I’m just not playing on this team! Wo-ugh.
FLASHBACK: Anne's room, Friday, later
Anne: They're not thinking about my feelings. Phew. It all makes perfect sense now.
Katie: It does?
Anne: Yes! When we choose our friends who think like us, it’s easy to get along. But families don’t choose each other. They have to learn to get along.
Katie: Well, I’m glad we solved that one.
Anne: I still have to figure out how to help Felicity and Felix get along.
FLASHBACK: Green Gables yard, Saturday morning
Anne: [voice over] The next morning, I decided to observe you and Marilla. I had to discover how you two were able to get along.
Marilla: Oh.
Anne: [voice over] I thought she would get angry and tell you to stop. But she didn’t. She did other chores, rather than disturb you.
FLASHBACK: Green Gables yard, Saturday morning, later
Anne: [voice over] Later, I heard you arguing about the hedge.
You compromised. Rather than argue you worked it out.
FLASHBACK: Green Gables yard, Saturday morning, later
Anne: [voice over] When the hedge was finished, then Marilla hung the laundry.
Marilla: [gasps] Ah. [laughs]
SCENE: Avonlea woods, Saturday afternoon, later
Anne: From my observations, I learned that you and Marilla respect each other. That’s how you get along.
Matthew: And I learned that you were spying.
Anne: Hm? It wasn’t spying. It was… research. Besides, I couldn’t spy for very long. I had to find Felicity and Felix.
FLASHBACK: King's house, Saturday noon, later
Anne: [voice over] First, I asked Peter and Penelope how they got along. Maybe respect is something only older people have.
Anne and Penelope: Ugh.
Penelope: I guess it’s respect. Peter wouldn’t borrow my things without asking.
Peter: Ugh. I’m scared of the water. But Penny would never make fun of me or tell anyone unless I told them first.
Anne: Don’t you ever fight? Ugh.
Peter: Yes. Auch!
Penelope: Ups. Sorry.
Peter: But when we’re really mad…
Penelope: …we leave each other alone.
Peter: Then we solve it when we're calm.
Penelope: Ugh.
Anne: Maybe we could convince Felicity and Felix to try that. Except, they won’t talk to one another.
Anne and Penelope: Weeell…
FLASHBACK: Pond, Saturday noon, later
Anne: We want to talk to you.
Felix: Sure. But you’ll miss your ride if you wait much longer.
Felicity: [gasps]
Felix: Oh, brother, here we go.
Felicity: I’m not staying here. Ugh.
Anne: You both are.
Felix: I don’t have anything to say.
Anne: You have to learn how to get along.
Felicity: How? I have no privacy and he’s always taking my things!
Felix: We’re supposed to share!
Peter: [off-screen] Penelope and I never take each other’s things without permission.
Penelope: We even put signs on our doors when we wanna be alone.
Felix: What? Whoa.
Anne: Your turn, Felix. What does Felicity do that upsets you?
Felicity: I don’t do anything wrong.
Felix: You make fun of me all the time!
Felicity: But it’s funny.
Felix: [off-screen] Whoaa. Oh, no! Not to me! Ugh.
Felicity: [sighs] You’re right. I’m sorry.
Felicity and Felix: Ugh. Ah. Argh. Eh.
Felicity: [off-screen] Wow, nice catch, Felix.
Felix: You too, Felicity.
Anne, Peter and Penelope: [off-screen] Wow! Look at that!
FLASHBACK: Avonlea woods, Saturday noon, later
Anne: [voice over] It took a while, but the fish got caught and brother and sister were reconciled. I know vanity is unbecoming, but I felt a good sense of accomplishment. Until we saw that everyone else had left for the reunion.
Felicity: [gasps]
Felix, Peter and Penelope: Oooh.
FLASHBACK: King's house, Saturday noon, later
Anne, Felicity and Peter: [breathe heavily]
Peter: We’ll never catch them.
Felicity: Thanks to us, you’ll miss the reunion.
Felix: [off-screen] There is a shortcut through the woods. We could take you.
Felicity: [gasps]
Anne: You’re not allowed to go to the reunion.
Felicity: We won’t. We’ll take them and walk back. That’ll help make up for how rotten we’ve been.
Felix: Great idea! Come on!
FLASHBACK: Avonlea woods, Saturday noon, later
Felix: Uh…
Felicity: We’ll take the… left path. It’s okay.
Scram you!
Felix: Thanks.
Felix: This way.
Anne: [voice over] It wasn’t such a long walk thanks to Mr. Gresham who happened to be passing by.
Felix: Hey!
Children: Hey! Mr. Gresham! Right here!
FLASHBACK: On the way to the reunion, Saturday noon, later
FLASHBACK: The beach, Saturday noon, later
Mrs. King: Peter, Penelope, thank goodness. We thought you were in the first wagon and nobody knew you were missing until we arrived.
[off-screen] And what are you two doing here?
Felicity: They helped us learn how to get along.
Felix: But that’s why they missed the wagons.
Felicity: So… we showed them the way. That’s all. Have fun.
Felix: I caught a fish for you.
Anne: Won’t you reconsider, Mrs. King?
[off-screen] They have turned over a new leaf.
Mrs. King: Stop, you two!
[off-screen] Have you really mended your ways?
Felix and Felicity: We’re trying.
Mrs. King: Then you may stay.
Anne, Peter and Penelope: Yaay!
FLASHBACK: The beach, Saturday afternoon, later
Felix: [off-screen] And as one of the young members of the King family, I am proud to have so many relatives that I can em… em… uh, look up to! Thanks to all for coming to Avonlea.
Felicity: [whispers]
Felix: Oh! And a toast to our friend Anne!
Anne: [gasps]
Felix: Felicity and I wouldn’t be here without her help. So we think today Anne should be an honorary King. To Anne!
The Kings: To Anne!
Anne: Aw, shucks.
SCENE: Green Gables, Saturday evening, later
Anne: [off-screen] So in the end, everything worked out.
Matthew: Whoa. Whoa, girl. You’re right, that was quite an adventure after all.
But I’m curious. You said that it was your second most wonderful adventure. What was the first?
Anne: Coming to live at Green Gables with you and Marilla, of course. Because I also learned today that it’s love that makes a family. Oh.
Marilla: Ow.
Anne: Oh, Marilla, I’m so glad to be home.
Matthew: We’re glad you’re home too, Anne. We’re glad you’re home.
A WORD FROM THE KIDS
Haleigh Sheehan: Who can tell us what bugs them about having brothers or sisters? Sure.
Boy in Green Shirt: It bugs me when my little sister always gets her way.
Boy in Beige Jumper: Every time I’m trying to play my PlayStation with my friend, my baby brother comes and turns off the power.
Haleigh: What are the nice things about having brothers or sisters? Sure.
Girl in Beige Tank Top: One thing is you almost never get bored because you can always play with them. Sometimes it’s helpful to have brothers and sisters encouraging you because if no one else is, then they’re… they’re always sure to do it, because they like you most of the time.
Girl in Pink T-shirt: It’s a good thing to have a bigger sister and a little brother as you never get lonely.
Haleigh: In the story, how is Anne’s family unique?
Girl in Beige Tank Top: Anne’s family is unique because Anne’s adopted. And the people who adopted her are brother and sister, not wife and husband.
Haleigh: Can anyone describe what makes their family unique? Sure.
Girl in Beige Tank Top: My family is unique because I have a half-sister that lives with us.
Haleigh: Can anyone describe who’s a part of your family? Sure.
Girl in Black Hoodie: In my family, there’s me, my five brothers, my mom, my dad and my rabbit.
Boy in Beige Jumper: In my family, there’s me, my little brother, my dad, my mom, my grandma, and my grandpa.
Haleigh: What sort of things make your family a family?
Girl with Glasses: The thing that makes my family a family is we play games together.
Girl in Black Hoodie: We eat dinner together and we go on trips.
Girl in Pink T-Shirt: The thing that makes my family a family is we… we help together, we help each other and sometimes we laugh together.
