Moody Spurgeon MacPherson was the son of Mr. and Mrs. MacPherson, the brother of Ella May, the classmate of Anne and Gilbert and a Presbyterian minister.

Biography

Early life

Moody was born in 1865 in Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, to Mr. and Mrs. MacPherson. He was raised there along with his sister Ella May and his friends Charlie, Fred and Gilbert. Moody attended Avonlea School in September 1871, at the age of six.

School years

Moody once was beat up by Charlie Sloane because he said Anne had put on airs about her performance. It is assumed Moody was quite smart to some degree, as he, along with Anne Shirley, Gilbert Blythe, Ruby Gillis, Jane Andrews, Charlie Sloane and Josie Pye made it to Queen's Academy.

Studies

Queen's Academy

Redmond College

He taught school before attending college. Poor Moody Spurgeon fell on hard luck at the very beginning of his college career. Half a dozen ruthless Sophs, who were among his fellow-boarders, swooped down upon him one night and shaved half of his head. In this guise the luckless Moody Spurgeon had to go about until his hair grew again. He told Anne bitterly that there were times when he had his doubts as to whether he was really called to be a minister.

Later life

Personality

Moody was very critical of himself and others: he criticized Anne's composition recitation saying, she had put on airs about it. He was also very critical of himself and worried about his grades at Queens to the point of wandering around distractedly until his grades were shown.

Physical appearance

Moody was apparently very unattractive being a funny-looking boy with that big fat face, and his little blue eyes, and his ears sticking out like flaps.

Etymology

Moody is an unusual male given name derived from surname. Spurgeon is a male given name of Old French origin and means medical plant or it may come from Old French word espurgier, which means to purge.

  • Moody's parents were evidently adherents of evangelical Protestantism, for they named their son after two famous evangelical preachers: Dwight L. Moody (1837–1899) and Charles Spurgeon (1834–1892).
