Trivia
- The current version of the official Road to Avonlea website describes her in these words: Janet is Alec’s loving but independent-minded wife. She loves her husband and children, but unlike many women of her era, she knows she is capable of being more than a wife and mother. She is not afraid to speak her mind and express her opinion about family, financial and political issues.[1]
- The 2012 version of the website described her thus: Janet King had a strict upbringing as a pastor’s daughter. At first, her over-bearing father would not let Alec King have anything to do with his daughter. It wasn’t until Janet’s Aunt Eliza stood up to her father that he relented and allowed Janet and Alec to be together and later marry in 1888. Together Janet and Alec had 4 children, Felicity, Felix, Cecily and Daniel, who they raised at King Farm.
In 1905 the budding women’s suffragette movement began to gain more attention, including the attention of Janet King. She took up the cause of improved wages for the cannery workers. The working conditions were deplorable, and the workers received very little respect from the owner Angus McCorkndale. Janet was more than willing to sacrifice for her beliefs in equality and fair and respectful treatment. Janet began organizing a strike and protests to try and change the minds of the cannery owners. These views almost came at the cost of her marriage and her freedom. During one of the protests Janet was arrested and imprisoned in Carmody. The wife of the Cannery owner, Margaret McCorkndale, learned that the cannery was losing money due to the strike, and forced her husband Angus to agree to Janet’s terms. Janet, now the victorious winner, was released from prison, and was able to reconcile with Alec.
Janet and Alec have had to face a few hurdles in their marriage, and their life in Avonlea. But their devotion to their children, the town and each other, has remained strong. The couple remained at King Farm with their daughter Cecily.[2]
