Henrietta "Hetty" E.[1] King is the eldest sister of Alec, Roger, Ruth and Olivia King, the guardian of Sara Stanley, a teacher of the Avonlea school, and a novelist under the pseudonym of H.E. La Roi.
Biography[]
Hetty is the King Family Matriarch.
Personality[]
Hetty is a witty, old-fashioned aunt to Felicity, Felix, Cecily, Daniel, Sara, and Andrew. As the oldest in the family, she thinks it is her job to be in charge of everybody after their parents pass away. Unfortunately, her authoritarian attitudes don't sit well with her family members.
Physical appearance[]
Relationships[]
Simon Tremayne[]
Hetty King is a business partner with Simon Tremayne. Their relationship is strictly only for business- until Simon proposes. Hetty accepts, but the engagement is soon cancelled, because Hetty's love for Rose Cottage and Simon's love for the hotel wouldn't be overcome by love.
Etymology[]
Behind the scenes[]
Portrayal
- Jackie Burroughs portrayed Hetty in Road to Avonlea (1990–1996) and Happy Christmas, Miss King (1998). Burroughs also played Amelia Evans in Anne of Green Gables (1985).
- Megan Kitchen portrayed young Hetty in flashback scenes in Road to Avonlea.
- Mairon Bennett provided the voice of young Hetty in Road to Avonlea. Bennett also portrayed Colleen Pritchard in another episode of the series. Mairon is the older sister of Zachary Bennett (Felix King) and starred as Jane Stuart in Lantern Hill (1990), based on Jane of Lantern Hill by L.M. Montgomery.
- Joan Heney played older Hetty in Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning (2008).
Trivia
- The current version of the official Road to Avonlea website describes her as the middle-aged, traditional and very serious school teacher of Avonlea and also the head of the King Family. She resides at Rose Cottage with her sister, Olivia, and her niece, Sara. Hetty is an important influence in Sara’s life as a strong role model and a mother figure.[2]
- The 2012 version of the website described her as the eldest child of Heziah King, and older sister to Alec King, Roger, Ruth and Olivia King-Dale. Hetty is the strict and traditional school teacher at the Avonlea schoolhouse. Her dated and conservative beliefs often clash with the rest of the King family. However, this was not always the case. As a child, Hetty was free-spirited and carefree: she was even tardy to school on occasion.
After the death of her mother, Hetty had to grow up fast. She was now the matriarch of the King family, and she needed to care for her younger siblings. Her first romantic interest was with Romney Penhallow. Hetty was in the seventh grade, and Romney had invited Rachel Lynde to the 1868 Christmas party to make Hetty jealous. His idea did not work out as planned and Hetty vowed to never talk to either one of them ever again: A grudge she held for 38 years.
Hetty decided to devote her life to teaching, and she decided to attend Queen's College to follow her passion. Her rival, Muriel Stacey won the coveted ‘Gold Graduation Medal’ and become the Avonlea School teacher. Eventually, Muriel left Avonlea, and Hetty took her place as the Avonlea School teacher.[3] - Hetty is not based on any parallel character from Lucy Maud Montgomery's The Story Girl and The Golden Road. In the books, Sara Stanley and Olivia King lived with Olivia's brother Roger, who in the show is Andrew King's father and appears in only one episode.

- ↑ H.E La Roi, Hetty's pseudonym, implies her middle name is E. La Roi means "The King" (her surname) in French, and H presumably stands for "Hetty" (her first name), implying that the "E" is the first initial of her middle name.
