Hannah Lester (née Hubble) was the niece of Ada Hubble, a student of the Avonlea school, and the eventual wife of Donny Lester.
Biography[]
Hannah arrived in Avonlea during the summer of 1911 under the care of her aunt, Ada, where she attended the Presbyterian Youth Group and Avonlea school. Hannah's thoughts were often preoccupied with boys and she soon began dating Donny Lester.
In her final year at school, Hetty King gave Hannah and the other final year girls a penny bottle of eau de toilette each as a Christmas gift, which Hannah would keep for years afterwards.
After leaving school, Hannah moved to Charlottetown, where she married Donny and had a daughter. As a result of running away to Charlottetown, Hannah and Ada became estranged.
In 1914, Hannah encountered Hetty again during her stay at the Charlottetown Hospital, where she was working as a maid. Hannah confessed to Hetty that married life was not as she had expected, as Donny could not find work and had enlisted as a soldier, noting "his paychecks aren't coming back as regular" as she would like. Hetty regretted that Hannah had come to her "too late" at school to have made a difference. Hannah later mentioned to Hetty that she felt "there was a lot being asked" of her and felt pressure to be "perfect".
