Dr. Gilbert John Blythe was the son of John Blythe, a friend and eventually the husband of Anne Shirley, a former teacher of the Carmody school and an army doctor during World War I.

Death of Marilla Cuthbert[]

As Anne had scarlet fever, Gilbert returned to Avonlea on his own for the funeral of Marilla Cuthbert. While there it was discovered that Green Gables was to be sold. Gilbert tried to rally the town in an attempt to save Green Gables from ending up in John Harrison's hands but was unsuccessful.[3]

Gilbert is a male given name of Old French origin and means bright promise. The surname Blythe comes from the Old English meaning of happy, joyous, blithe.
