Geraldine James is an English actress who portrays Marilla Cuthbert in the Canadian TV series Anne with an E (2017–2019).

Biography

Geraldine James was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire. Her father was a cardiologist and her mother was a housewife. In 1973 she graduated from Drama Centre London and began working in theatre.^{[citation needed]}

She has been nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for Best Actress four times. She won an award at Venice Film Festival in 1989 for Best Actress and at Drama Desk Award in 1990 for Outstanding Actress in a Play. In 2018 she won an award for her portrayal of Marilla Cuthbert in Anne with an E.

The director Peter Hall has said that Geraldine James is among one of the best English classical actresses.
