Eliza Ward was the aunt of Walter Ward, the great-aunt of Janet and Abigail Ward, and the great-great-aunt of Felicity, Felix, Cecily, Daniel, and Lucky.

Biography[]

Eliza Ward was born in England in 1821. She grew up with her cousin Winifred in Southampton, who she later moved with to London. Eliza would often visit Convent Garden in the morning to pick up flowers for her cousin. In later years, Eliza met and fell in love with a soldier named Owen Bryer. Winifred also fell in love with Owen and followed him to nurse in the Crimean War. On Owen's deathbed he left a silver chest with letters addressed to Eliza, which Winifred, through jealousy, concealed from her cousin.

Eliza emigrated to Canada with her family sometime after this and settled in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and often visited her nephew the Rev. Walter Ward, along with his two daughters, Janet and Abigail in his parish of Avonlea. When Janet began to court the young farmer Alec King, it was Eliza who reconciled Walter to the match.

In later years, Eliza became a close member of Janet and Alec's family and the wider Avonlea community.

Eliza celebrated her 90th birthday in Avonlea during the winter of 1911 and was paid a visit by an increasingly vulnerable Winifred. Leaving Eliza's party early, Winifred quickly deteriorated in health and made amends with Eliza by revealing the letters Owen Bryer had left her. Winifred passed away soon after and Eliza granted her last wish by accompanying Winifred's body to be buried in the Southampton churchyard near to where they had grown up together as young girls.

Trivia

  • The 2012 version of the official Road to Avonlea website described her as Janet King's Great Aunt Eliza, who visits the King farm often over the years, and is both a source of consternation and wisdom for the family. Though she never married, Great Aunt Eliza is a romantic at heart, and it was she who convinced Janet’s father Walter to allow Alec King as her suitor. In Season 5, elderly Great Aunt Eliza learns how to play piano to show Hetty King that one is never too old to learn new things.[1]
