When Marilla was harrassed by the sewing circles about former beaus, Marilla made up the name Duncan McTavish. By a strange twist of fate, a travelling salesman by the name of Duncan McTavish entered Avonlea. After questioning from the town began to hurt his business, Duncan confronted Marilla. They soon reached an understanding and decided to play up their fictional romance for the town.
Etymology[]
Duncan is an anglicized form of the Gaelic name Donnchadh, derived from Gaelic donn "brown" and cath "battle".
