Anne had defended him against Josie Pye after he refused to kiss Josie and was called a freak. He, being as tall as he is, snatched Anne's belonging away from Billy Andrews after he grabbed it from her. During spin the bottle, Anne took her turn and no boy wanted to kiss her since she was an orphan, so he quickly stood up and said he would, causing both of them to be ridiculed, in which Anne pulled him down and kissed his cheek, both smiled.
