Trivia

  • The 2012 version of the official Road to Avonlea website described him as Colonel Clive Pettibone and his family moved to Avonlea in the winter of 1907. His wife, Jessica became ill and died while he was serving in the Canadian Army, stationed at the Proctor Military Academy in India. When he came to Avonlea, his militaristic teaching style did not sit with the small town civilian community. Clive was forced by the school board to reevaluate his attitudes, and he was able to make the necessary adjustments, and remain in Avonlea. The Colonel also had a hidden passion for writing. He wrote pulp fiction novels under the pen name C.L. Small, and even collaborated with Hetty King during her sabbatical from teaching. Clive was elected the first volunteer fire chief in Avonlea his competitor Alec King was not chosen even though the deciding vote was left to his sister, Hetty. Clive decided to enter himself in the 1st annual bachelor’s auction, where he was "won" by Muriel Stacey, and the pair began a relationship soon after. They were later married in Carmody, and started their lives together with Clive accepting a position as Chief Attendant of Schools, which required a substantial amount of time away from Avonlea.[1]
