Behind the scenes[]
Casting
- Mary Kate Wiles and Sean Persaud reprise their roles as Anne Shirley and Gilbert Blythe, whom they played in the 2014 Kissing in the Rain episode "Anne & Gilbert".
- Wiles had previously portrayed Anne in a 2011 stage adaptation of Anne of Green Gables.
- Christopher Higgins (Paul Irving) previously played Gilbert Blythe in the 2012 production of Bend in the Road.
- This project also reunites Wiles with Julia Cho (Mrs. Donnell/Lauretta White/Julia Bell). They became known for their portrayals of Lydia Bennet and Charlotte Lu respectively in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012–2013). That web series started a trend of modern adaptations of classic novels based on weekly vlogs and transmedia experience, inspiring the creation of Green Gables Fables (2014–2016) and Project Green Gables (2015–2018).
- Their The Lizzie Bennet Diaries co-stars Ashley Clements (Lizzie Bennet) and Laura Spencer (Jane Bennet) provided the voices of Mrs. Barry/Ruby Gillis and Miss Stacy respectively in this audio drama's prequel, Anne of Green Gables.
- Another web series which popularised the genre of modern adaptations in the early 2010s and have been listed as one of the major inspirations and influences upon the creation of similar projects was Emma Approved (2013–2014). Being the sequel of The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, it starred Joanna Sotomura (Priscilla Grant) as the titular character.
- Both The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Emma Approved featured Jessica Jade Andres (Jane Andrews/Catherine Andrews) who played the part as Caroline Bing (originally named Caroline Bingley).
Trivia
- This adaptation combines the techniques of traditional audiobooks and audio dramas. The former type can be characterised as a recorded reading of a specific book by one actor who narrates the story and provides all of the character voices. The latter genre is generally represented by a dramatised and shortened version of the source material, focusing on a dialogue read by various actors. The narrator does not have to be present – if they are, their role tends to be less prominent than in the audiobook format. Anne of Avonlea includes the narration from the original novel (albeit with minor changes), but the characters are read by the supporting ensemble cast.
