Anne Shirley is the orphaned daughter of Walter and Bertha Shirley, the adoptive daughter of Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, a former pupil and teacher of the Avonlea school, and student of Redmond College.
Biography[]
Anne Shirley was born in Bolingbroke, Nova Scotia, Canada to Walter and Bertha Shirley. Her parents passed away when she was a few days old and was subsequently taken in by the Thomas family. A number of years later, Anne was taken in by Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert of Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, who were expecting a boy to help with the farm. Anne later recounts to Davy Keith that she had felt so unwanted that she planned to run away but was glad that she ultimately did not as she had a happy childhood in Avonlea and, it is also revealed, Matthew filed formal adoption papers for Anne.
Anne attended the local Avonlea school, where she became friends with Diana Barry, Ruby Gillis and Jane Andrews, who would later form the Story Club, and met Gilbert Blythe and Charlie Sloane.
Anne later attended Queen's Academy with Ruby, Jane and Gilbert to train to be a teacher, and it was here that she became friends with Priscilla Grant.
After Matthew passed away, Anne became increasingly close to Marilla and gave up her place at Redmond College to stay by Marilla's side while she battled failing eyesight. Anne became a guardian of Davy and Dora Keith when Marilla took in the twins after their mother Mary's death. When the autumn came, Anne began to teach at the Avonlea school. Initially finding it daunting to teach her former classmates, Anne soon found her feet and became a well-respected teacher.
After saving enough money and being reassured by Marilla's improving health, Anne moved away to Kingsport, Nova Scotia to attend Redmond College alongside old friends Jane, Gilbert and Charlie.
During her second year, Anne moved into Patty's Place with Philippa Gordon, Jane, and Aunt Jimsie. It was during this time that Anne started to court Roy Gardner after being caught out in a storm with him.
Anne returned to Avonlea to be a bridesmaid for childhood friend Diana, where she had an awkward encounter with Gilbert, who was acting as Fred's best man. The two argued over Roy but Gilbert managed to persuade Anne to visit the home she was born in over in Bolingbroke, where she was able to retrieve some old letters written from her mother to her father.
Anne, after all her hard work, graduated from Redmond College and, as expected, received a proposal from Roy, which was declined.
Anne returned Green Gables for the summer after graduation to learn from Davy's misjudged words that Gilbert was dying. Anne stayed up with Marilla fretfully over the course of the night and rushed over to Gilbert's bedside in the early hours of the morning to find that he was out of danger and the two reconciled.
